Become an Editor

SAIS students apply to become editors for many reasons: to improve their own writing, to learn about new fields, to explore careers in publishing and journalism, to learn new skills, and to meet other students with the same interests.

Assistant editors come on board at the beginning of each semester after submitting a current resume to the senior editors and an interview.

The time commitment for assistant editors consists of weekly one-hour meetings and approximately twenty hours per semester of editing and journal development.

Recommend Topics

Topics for future issues of SAIS Review come from the editorial board.  SAIS Review tries to look at international affairs from new angles and with different viewpoints.  Past topics have for example included migration, gender in international relations, and the informal economy.

The assistant editors propose topics, conduct research, and present their ideas to their colleagues at the weekly meetings.  The board ultimately decides the topic by a majority vote.

Submit an Article

SAIS Review is a student-run journal of professional quality. In each issue, at least one student article and several student reviews that meet the same standards applied to the other articles are included.  These vary in length from 4,000 to 6,000 words, or twenty to twenty-five pages, including introduction, text, conclusion, and endnotes.  Articles can be on any topic related to international relations.  Please include subheadings to highlight substantive divisions within the article.

SAIS Review will rely on the author to verify facts within the text. On a separate sheet please include an author identification as you would like it to appear at the foot of the title page.  Calls for papers go out twice per year and are reviewed by the editorial board.  If selected, the author works closely with the editors on revisions.

Write a Book Review

Students are encouraged to review books published within the past year by prominent scholars, government officials, activists, or other public persons of note. SAIS Review also reviews films, speeches, and events of relevant content.  Reviews are typically 1,500 to 2,500 words, or five to eight double-spaced pages. They introduce the book or event, relevant background on the creator, and a critique of the arguments and premises made.

Contribute Photos

In their travels abroad, students capture stories on film that drive home an article's message in a way words cannot. We encourage students to submit photos that focus on the next issue's theme(s). Contact us at saisreview@jhu.edu for topic listings.

Additionally, photo essays are becoming a regular feature of the journal. If you have a collection of prints or slides that tell a compelling story of international interest, we encourage you to contact the senior editors. Past photo essays have illustrated gender issues in the Eritrean-Ethiopian conflict and religion among the Nuba people of Sudan.
